I love a good cup of coffee but more than anything I love a great cup of espresso. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find the perfect espresso, or what baristas call the god shot. Why god shot, because it would taste heavenly. In my quest, I have learned a couple of things on what it would take to make the perfect shot and all the coffee connoisseurs that I have talked to and the baristas I have challenged talk about having the best espresso machine. Quality coffee beans, the right technique, and timing are just part of the process, if your espresso machine is not that great then your espressos won’t be that great either.
There are two types of espresso machines that you can buy for your home, a manual espresso maker or an automatic one. The first espresso machine I owned was a manual one that I picked up at an auction. It looked nice and shiny and I like the fact that it had been used in a coffee house before. Learning how to work the contraption was just too much. It is still a great looking machine but I have not had any success in producing a decent cup of anything.
The next espresso machine I bought was an automatic one. I liked the idea of a piece of equipment that was designed to create something heavenly with just a push of a button. I found the best automatic espresso maker to be the Nespresso. I have a Nespresso Citiz which has a steamer for milk and a frother for cappuccinos and lattes. Nespresso machines aren’t just good but they are consistent. You get to use capsules with the right amount of ground coffee beans in them. You will get the best tasting espresso every time and they are reasonably priced too. Considering the amount of money a serious espressoholic like me spends at coffee shops, a price range of $200 to $300 is a bargain.
By speaking to friends, fellow espresso lovers and amateur baristas I have compiled a list of the best espresso machines. The Nespresso Citiz still comes up as the best most widely used automatic machine. Other machines that have had rave reviews include the Delonghi EN550S Lattisima Touch and the Nespresso Inissia. Have I tasted the God shot yet? not yet but I am enjoying having my little machine and maybe one of these days I’ll graduate to a super-automatic espresso machine.
